Johannesburg - An off duty police officer was wounded after he tried to intervene in an attempted robbery at a burger outlet in Mondeor, south of Johannesburg, police said on Saturday.

Spokesperson Julia Claassen said four armed men entered the food outlet at the Southgate Value Mart complex at 20:44 on Friday.

The off duty officer, who was having a meal with his family at the outlet, tried to intervene, but he had his service pistol taken from him and he was shot.

The 44-year-old policeman was wounded in the back. After being stabilised by paramedics, he was airlifted to the Trauma Unit at the Netcare Milpark Hospital for treatment.
