Tunis - Participants in a demonstration by Tunisian actors, musicians and other artists say police violently broke up their demonstration in support of youth who have taken to the streets in recent weeks.

Tunisian stage director Fadhel Jaibi has told The Associated Press that Tuesday's protest by about 100 artists and intellectuals was "violently broken up" by a large number of uniformed and plain-clothes officers.

The protest was held in front of the municipal theatre in central Tunis.

Jaibi says the demonstration was meant to condemn the ongoing government crackdown on rioters who've taken to the streets to protest widespread joblessness. The government has responded by opening fire on demonstrators in some areas.
