Niamey - The first round of presidential elections to restore a civil regime to Niger following a February coup will be held on January 3 2011, the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) said on Saturday.

"The first round of the presidential election coupled with general elections will be held on January 3 2011," CENI chairperson Abdourahmane Ghousmane announced on public television.

A possible second round would be held on January 14, with final results to be announced on March 4, and the new elected president would take up office on March 11.

Niger has been run by a military junta since the February 18 overthrow of president Mamadou Tandja after 10 years in power. Tandja had brought about a political crisis by seeking to extend his mandate beyond its legal term.

The military pledged to return power to civilians after a transition period of 12 months.
