Mogadishu - Dozens of people were feared to have been killed on Friday when the Islamist group al-Shabaab attacked an African Union military base in southern Somalia, local military officials said.

A suicide car bombing first hit an AU base in Lego village, followed by heavy gunfire against AU and Somali troops in the area, Somali senior military commander Abdikarin Osman said.

"Our initial reports suggest that five Somali soldiers and several Islamist militants were killed. But I cannot give you a number of casualties" for the AU forces, he added.

More than 20 000 AU soldiers are in Somalia to help the government battle al-Shabaab. Lego is the operational base for the AU troops in the Lower Shebelle region.

The Islamist group claimed responsibility for the attack on pro-insurgent radio Andalus.
