Accra - A 25-year-old Dutch woman was shot and killed during a robbery in southern Ghana, police said on Sunday.

Afke Kuipers was on her way home with colleagues on Friday in the port city of Tema, east of the capital Accra, when their car was surrounded by four armed men on motorcycles, police divisional commander David Eklu said.

"They were robbed of mobile phones, cameras and personal effects," he said. Kuipers was then shot and taken to a local hospital, he added.
"We understand she died at the hospital," Eklu said.

No arrests have been made in the case yet.

The victim was in Ghana carrying out research on child workers in coastal communities, police said.
