Egypt detains Israeli army officer

2013-01-01 09:00

Cairo - Egyptian security forces have detained an Israeli army officer in the Taba region of the Sinai peninsula after he snuck through a border crossing and took photographs of security property and talked to drivers, security sources said.

"The Israeli officer was arrested by national security forces on December 29. State security is now interrogating him," a national state security officer told Reuters.

The state news agency Mena said the arrested man is a Tel Aviv resident of Russian origin named Andrea Chetekov. He was not carrying a passport when he entered Sinai and his name was not on tourist arrival lists, Mena said.

State television earlier reported the arrested man was a former army officer named Andre Yacoub and had entered Egypt illegally.

Security sources in Sinai said the 24-year-old, a resident of Tel Aviv, had been gathering information about Sinai from drivers in the area near the Taba border crossing between Egypt and Israel. The officer was taken to the Nuweiba area in Sinai, where he was being questioned, the sources said.

Egypt is trying to reassert control over the Sinai which has suffered from lax security since the uprising that overthrew Hosni Mubarak in February 2011.

Why didn't u shoot him? If he was a Palestinian he would have been shot

      David - 2013-01-01 10:04

No Thembinkosi. If he was an African migrant he would have been shot. That's what the Egyptians do to African migrants trying to enter Israel (and Thembinkosi there are so many that try -one can only assume that they get treated better in Israel than in the other countries in the region). Besides Israel is too intelligent to send a soldier into Egypt to take photos. They are super sophisticated with technology (do you know what a satellite is or a drone?). He is just an Israeli tourist who is in Egypt. You forget that there is a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. He is supposed to be allowed to go on holiday there and take pictures.

@David - While it is true that Egyptian forces treat Africans badly i feel that you are exaggerating that the Israelis treat them better. I mean Israelis treat Palestinians so bad ,why will they treat Africans well?? Just a few months ago Israelis went on rampage and killed some African migrants. Your PM had to pay the Africans to leave. If that is not ill treatment i don't know what is. Now I am not saying Isrealis are bad people, they are not but they also treat Africans badly. You see my friend there is one thing I come to realize since I became an adult. No one likes Africans, anyone who is not Africans hates Africans. From the beginning of time we have been classified as sub humans so other races have all being brainwashed to believe that we are not their equals. The only reason countries of the world accommodate Africa and Africans is because of our minerals resources. I believe that if African land was barren ,all Africans would have been barred from ever entering any country outside Africa. That is the naked truth, the way I see it.

@David -I was in Zurich recently and I couldn’t help notice how Africans were given special treatment at the airport. I have made a mental note never to fly to Zurich or Switzerland for as long as I am alive. I for one feel that other races wish we did not exist. It is the vibe I get everywhere I go outside Africa. Sometimes I even day dream and wish the entire African continent can be transported to a different planet where we Africans can live and thrive in isolation and only have to contend with ourselves. Our existence in global village is to our detriment because we are being suppressed from being self determined. Yes there will tribal issue but at least we won’t regard our race as sub human. In isolation the mental shackles that many of our people live will be broken. There will be no superior race, there will just one race.

@David -As for Isreal being super sophisticated that is laughable. The USA which has probably the best military in the world and the most efficient intelligence services makes blunders all the time talk less of Mossad. You remember the guys who killed the Hamas leader in Dubai?? They were all on camera! There was nothing sophisticated about that. An paid assassin would have executed that job flawlessly. Being sophisticated is about not being seen or being caught. Many of your lightweight drones have been downed in Sudan and Iran. You guys also bombed Sudan recently even though the media never reported it. Israel has never been properly tested because anytime you guys fight big brother USA is there to offer covert assistant. I worked in navy intelligence and i am privy to first hand information abut what really happened during all those wars you fought. You and I know that without the USA , Israel is a sitting duck except for the stolen Russian nukes which the Americans gave you ,the ones you developed after and the chemical bombs in your arsenal.

What happened to David? Y so quiet?

      True

He is not even close to being an officer. This story is totally incorrect. He is an unbalanced individual who has been in trouble before. Last year he tried to relinquish his israeli citizenship and become a palestinian and live in a palestinian city. He was arrested by the palestinians (as Jews are not allowed by law into areas controlled by the Palestinian authority). He now tried to get into gaza via egypt in order to try and join Hamas. He was arrested by Egyptians for entering Egypt illegally. The people who wrote this should have done some basic research about this individual as it he has been in the Israeli English press on numerous occasions. A simple google search would have sufficed

      Where did you very that?

  • Raymon - 2013-01-01 14:04

What a BS story! Just another attempt to tarnish Israel's image. Pathetic!

      mrgmkhan - 2013-01-04 21:23

AND U KNOW THAT FOR A FACT OR IS IT THAT ANY NEWS REPORT ABOUT ISRAELS ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES IS PROPAGANDA TO YOU?
