Egyptian police kill three suspected militants near Cairo

2015-09-17 19:04

Cairo - Egyptian police said on Thursday that they killed three militants suspected of involvement in attacks on security forces.

The Interior Ministry, which is in charge of security in Egypt, said the gunfire erupted after a raid by police on a hideout in the desert on the outskirts of Cairo.

It did not say when the raid was mounted or if there were casualties among police.

The ministry said the three had carried out deadly attacks on police this year in Cairo and the nearby city of Giza.

Egypt has seen an increase in militant attacks mainly against security forces since the army's 2013 overthrow of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi following massive protests against his rule.
