Bangui - African regional peacekeepers have fired into the air in Central African Republic's capital to disperse an angry mob trying to hunt down and kill an ex-rebel leader.

A crowd of thousands gathered on Thursday outside the Saint-Jacques Church in Bangui and tried to block peacekeepers from entering, including some people who hurled large stones at them.

The angry crowd said a general with the rebel movement now in power was inside, but the only men who emerged with the peacekeepers wore civilian clothes.

Civilians angered by the regime's abuses are exacting revenge against suspected ex-rebels. In one case they stoned a man to death in the street.

French forces and African regional peacekeepers are now in Central African Republic in effort to secure the near-anarchic country.
