France urges rapid Mali deployment

2013-01-12 11:23

New York - France has asked the United Nations to "accelerate" implementation of a resolution that enables the deployment of an international force to Mali.

The letter also formally notified the Security Council that it had responded to a request for help from Mali's interim president Dioncounda Traore.

French forces were lending their support to Mali to "fight against terrorist elements", said the letter, from France's ambassador to the United Nations, Gerard Araud.

The operation would last as long necessary, it added.

Backed by French air power, Malian troops on Friday unleashed an offensive against Islamist rebels who, having seized control of the north of the country in March last year, were threatening to push south.

"Mali faces terrorist elements coming from the north who today threaten the territorial integrity of this state, its very existence and the safety of its population," said the letter.

Addressed to Pakistani ambassador Masood Khan, whose country currently holds the 15-nation panel's presidency, it also called for swift implementation of a Security Council resolution approving an African-led intervention force in Mali.

While the UN Security Council has already approved the 3 000-strong force, it is not expected to be ready to deploy before September.

The letter said that the French operation, "taking place under the framework of international law, will last as long as necessary."

ft.burhaak - Western Leaders are not very bright hence why they ran their countries’ finances into the ground. Just look at China, smart people the Chinese. Stays away from trouble and keeps building its economy. Now they literally own America and most of the west. You see western leaders are evil and we all know Evil never prevails hence why they are loosing credibility even with their own citizens by the day. The old way of doing things is no longer working for them but they are too stupid to turn a new leaf. They created Mali's problems and are now going back to try and solve it even though we know they will just replace it with another problem.Never have i seen a bunch of dumb leaders before. One would have thought the azz whooping they got in the middle east will make them think twice but "stupid" just has to be stupid.

@Omonajia,i agree,i sympathise with the the average citizens of western countries, since the money being waisted waging wars by their governments could be better used to help them.Their leaders have to create a villian in the world which is now Islam to create a decoy/diversion to blame for the failures of the wests policies and doctrines, whos demise is due to their disregard of a spiritual God Fearing existence.

@Squeegee pilot. You cant go to war with everyone who doesnt want to conform to your policies which you want to impose on sovereign lands since they also see you as despotic regimes, trying to steal land, from their point of view.

The same 'shock and awe' force that failed in Iraq, and all the other 'full forces' that failed in Afghanistan,Somalia, created a mess in Libya and so forth!

      gorden.norman - 2013-01-12 13:43

Yeah and now you dumb asses are fighting each other and you all have the same religion that very smart. Jihad will fail everybody knows that.

      ft.burhaak - 2013-01-12 14:14

We can take the blows of critism on the cheek Gorden, but when we critisize they say we got 'chips' on our shoulders.Let me say that Jihad means 'struggle, whether its against self vice, oppression, injustice etc.No one says that 'muslims' cant be oppressors too.So from my understanding of Hadith the Jihadist will deal with those 'muslims' who the Quran refers to as Hypocrites, since the hypocites assume a false sense of might and power to oppress due to arrogance and wealth.Thats why you find feuds bet muslims occasionally.
