Gambia cops arrest 15 'gay' men

Banjul - Gambian police arrested 15 men "suspected of homosexuality" at a bar in a suburb of the capital Banjul, police sources told AFP on Tuesday.

The men, all Gambians except one Senegalese, were arrested late on Monday when police raided a bar in a popular tourist area. Officers had received a tip of people "publicly displaying or promoting homosexual activities", a senior police officer speaking on condition of anonymity told AFP.

"They will be charged accordingly after we have completed our investigations," the police official said.

The Gambia's treatment of gays has long drawn criticism from international observers, who accuse the small west African nation of egregious homophobia.

Homosexuality is banned and men or women in same-sex relationships can face up to 14 years in prison.

Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has repeatedly denounced homosexuality and in 2008 he even vowed to behead gays, a threat he later retracted.

This is so wrong. What gives government the right to tell their people who they may or may not love????

  • Wayne - 2012-04-11 11:29

@ carla - theres a reason why god created Male & Female... he would have just created one sex then

      Jonathan - 2012-04-11 11:46

And if god created man and women then he must have created homosexuality too. Seeing that humans are created in gods image, I'd have to say that god must be homosexual in his own right.

      Carla - 2012-04-11 12:07

@Wayne - what's your point???? What do the rules of a sick government have to do with God?

Here is the case of a backwater society crippled by extreme ignorance and predajuce. I get very scared when I read the caliber of comments left by the usual stock of news24 posters. I don't like accepting that there can be such twisted, ignorant baffoons living in my country.
