Banjul - Gambia's former foreign minister Mamboury Njie, who was sacked in late August after only four months in the job, has been arrested, police and family sources said on Monday.

"It's true, I saw him being escorted to the major crimes unit of the police headquarters this afternoon where he is currently being held," said a senior police official.

It was not clear whether he had been charged with anything yet, but local media suggested Njie was fired for criticising President Yahya Jammeh's decision to execute nine death row inmates in August, which prompted an international outcry.

Under intense diplomatic pressure Jammeh has since halted plans to execute another 38 prisoners.
