Conakry - Trial has begun in a remote region of Guinea of suspects in the killings of five Ebola health workers and three journalists last September.

Ministry of Justice spokesperson Ibrahima Beavogui said 78 suspects are on trial in N'Nzerekore, 900km from the capital Conakry.

Defence lawyers maintain their clients are not the real perpetrators of the attack, just innocents picked up in military sweeps.

In September, a team of health officials and journalists came to Womey village to educate people how to avoid contracting Ebola, which is raging through the West African state, and were attacked.

Eight members of the team were killed by knives and rocks, underscoring the fear and mistrust people felt for health workers — often believing they had brought the deadly disease with them.
