Cape Town – Malawi President Joyce Banda has said that she won’t "cry" over the freezing of aid by foreign donors due to a multi-million pound corruption scandal that involves dozens of her officials, a report says.

Malawi’s biggest donor Britain suspended its direct aid to Malawi last month in a move that was likely to have a catastrophic effect on the country’s ability to provide basic services.

The embattled leader said she was not going to cry over the freezing of aid although she understood the need for British politicians and taxpayers to have confidence in her government, according to Telegraph.

Banda said she would work hard to ensure trust was built between the two countries, adding that everyone involved in the scandal would be held accountable.

The European Union and Norway have also withdrawn their support for Malawi.
