I won't disappoint, says Jonathan

Abuja - Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday vowed that his government would work to harness the huge potential of the oil-rich country, which remains dogged by poverty and violence.

"I bring you today, a message of renewed hope and faith in the immense possibilities that lie ahead," said Jonathan in the radio and television broadcast to mark the nation's 52nd independence anniversary.

"The baton is now in our hands. Let me assure all Nigerians that we shall not fail," Jonathan said.

Insecurity, corruption, poverty as well as poor health facilities, electric power supply and infrastructure are some of the serious challenges facing most of the 160 million inhabitants of Africa's most populous nation.

He said his administration had taken measures to fight rampant militant activity, including by stepping up co-operation with its neighbours in west Africa.

Nigeria's north has been hit by scores of bombings and shootings attributed to the Boko Haram Islamist group, which is suspected of ties to al-Qaeda and has been blamed for more than 1 400 deaths since 2010.

A string of attacks have also hit the country's centre and capital Abuja.

Nigeria, Africa's largest oil producer, is roughly divided between a mainly Muslim north and predominantly Christian south.

Jonathan, who was elected into office last year, said that his government was succeeding with its fight against the scourge of corruption in all facets of the nation's economy.

"We have exposed decades of scam in the management of pensions and fuel subsidy and ensured that culprits are being brought to book," Jonathan said.

Some people and companies are facing corruption charges following a parliamentary probe which found that Nigeria lost $6.8bn through the subsidy programme between 2009-2011.

Yawn...same old song. You are the worst president ever.Even the military dictators were better than you.Nigeria was on the move since regaining democracy in 2000 but as you stepped in 2011 ,you brought back mass corruption. We had no foreign debt before you but now we are knee deep in it. You Sir ,your wife and your cronies are heartless leaders. You are educated but choose to use your education to enslave your people.Nigeria should by now be in the top 5 countries in the world considering the mineral resources and number of well educated people we have but your evil leadership has once again rendered us helpless. Now our big brains are migrating and working for multinational companies overseas instead of working in Nigeria because they are not valued. You are rotten to core and i hope that we get a leader like Mr Fashola who has in 5 years turned Lagos around. You are a disgrace of a president and no leader of mine. You have done nothing for the past 3 years you have been in power.Name one single achievement you have made in Nigeria as a president, just one? Look at the leaders before you, each of one suffered the loss of a close relative while they were in power. Why do you think that is? Yep ,our prayers are being answered. We may not be able to face your army but our GOD will fight for us.Now your wife is terminally ill and has been in Germany for several weeks with no improvement.Change your ways lead with honesty and integrity otherwise we will keep praying against you.
