Juba - South Sudan is continuing to export oil this week, the country's Petroleum Ministry said on Monday, after a cut-off deadline from Sudan was extended by two weeks.

Sudan in June told South Sudan it was going to block all exports through its pipelines starting in early August, accusing Juba of aiding rebels hostile to Khartoum.

"All the oil wells in Unity and Upper Nile states are operating. As it stands, we are producing between 100 000 and 180 000 barrels per day," Petroleum and Mining Ministry spokesperson Nicodemus Ajak Bior said.

"There is an extension until 22 August," he said.

The extension was arranged by negotiators from Ethiopia and the African Union, eager to see the two nations resolve their differences without resorting to shutdowns that would hit both economies and increase the risk of conflict.

When South Sudan seceded and became independent in 2011, it took with it two-thirds of Sudan's oil reserves, but the landlocked country is entirely dependent on pipelines that run through the north to bring its oil to market.
