Nairobi - Two police officers and six alleged attackers were killed in an overnight gunfight outside a casino in the Kenyan coastal resort town of Malindi, police said on Thursday.

Local police chief Jared Ojuok said that 60 people armed with AK-47s and machetes attacked the casino. Officers were still pursuing some of the attackers.

Police suspected it was either criminals or members of the Mombasa Republican Council, a separatist group operating in the coastal area.

"We are going to carry out a forensic investigation on the six [attackers] killed to see if they are members of the MRC or just a criminal gang," Ojouk said.

Two other officers who were shot are in stable condition.

Malindi, known for its beaches and nightclubs, is a popular destination for European tourists.

Easter weekend is usually a busy time for the coast's tourist industry, a key foreign currency earner. Hotels report low occupancies due to uneasiness after a general election this month.

The disputed presidential election results are being handled by a court, which is expected to issue a verdict on Saturday. In 2007, post election violence claimed more than 1 000 lives.
