2011-02-22 11:24

Cairo - Runways at Libya's Benghazi airport have been destroyed in the violence that has gripped the country and passenger planes cannot land there, Egypt's Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit said on Tuesday.

"Regarding east of Libya, the Benghazi airport runways have been destroyed. It is not possible for Egyptair flights or any other flights to land in that airport," Aboul Gheit told a news conference.

    So they can take off?

      cancer1983 - 2011-02-22 11:36

      I would assume they can't.

  • cancer1983 - 2011-02-22 11:32

Oh Mr. President of the United States of Africa, you have been weighed, you have been measured, and you have been found wanting!

      jamesonl - 2011-02-22 12:08

I agree with you cancer1983. His excellence has been found absolutely wanting! Poor Mr President.

So you enjoyed 'A Knight's Tale' last night eh...

Seems to me he needs to call a genral election. I doubt these Libyans are going to give in, and its not like Gadaffi to budge. Cant see too many good ways for this to end. We are so lucky to live in South Africa. I cannot think of one place I would rather be right now.

      Fred Basset - 2011-02-22 12:18

      Ditto dude

      Mxhuma - 2011-02-22 18:32

Whow! Do you honestly believe that this is time for such nice words as a general election. The Colonel did not call one since 1969. He has even spoken out publicly that elections are a waste of money. The kind of general election Gaddafi has in mind is one where one of his sons will ascend that evil throne after him. The man is heartless! I am fully aware that as a country we are 'friends' with that fellow who aspires to be the leader of the whole Continent of Africa. He might have helped us during the struggle for freedom in this country but that does not give us the debt to court souless dictators like him. Even if the people fail(my prayer is that they succeed) to dislodge this chap he will be greatly shaken.

Isn't that usually a sign of impending war? Who destroyed the runways?

      lmduplessis - 2011-02-22 12:09

I Doubt any protester has the means to damage a solid runway SO SEVERELY that no planes can take off/land. You need fighter/bombers with special crater-bombs to do that. And if you're wondering why, it's prob so ppl can't escape. The ppl who ordered this prob still think they are going to win this and want to keep everyone close so they can punish them later.

      njmaboea - 2011-02-22 15:20

We celebrate the liberation of the people, yes, but I wonder if the tragedy of the bloodshed will dawn on us. Bombing your own people, hiring mercenaries... what else will Gaddhafi do?

  • Shistirrer - 2011-02-22 11:53

    The domino's: Tunisia -> Egypt -> Libya ( -> Yemen -> Algeria -> Iran -> Bahrain -> Zimbabwe -> South Africa? )

      lmduplessis - 2011-02-22 12:00

Pffff. Sub-saharan africans are too chicken-sh*t to revolt like in North Africa.

      Maki - 2011-02-22 12:05

lol, why would you include South Africa on that list?

      cloppybanda - 2011-02-22 12:12

South Africa its just a matter of time. I see the Mugabe in Zuma + ANC

      alessandroz067 - 2011-02-22 12:37

Most Iranians don't have a problem with their leader. He is one of the most humble of people you will ever meet. Maybe you should think about your domino effect?

      Shistirrer - 2011-02-22 15:31

@alessandroz067 and Maki: The list is quite probable. Protests have already started in all these countries, including Iran, and yes, South Africa. Or what would you call the service delivery protests? Peaceful gatherings? In today's news: 5 Zimbabweans arrested for just TALKING about the Egyptian revolt.

    What about helicopters?

      Logs01 - 2011-02-22 12:24

Too many "holes" in the air, they can't fly

      Crispy_Duck - 2011-02-22 13:23

Most helicopters have a very short range and if then they need to refuel. Usually this happens at an airport.....
