Libya rebels seize control of state TV

Algiers - Libya's Jamahiriyah state television channel went off the air on Monday and a rebel spokesperson said forces opposed to Muammar Gaddafi had taken control of state TV headquarters in Tripoli.

"The revolutionaries stormed the television building... after killing the soldiers surrounding it. It is now under their control," the spokesperson said.

He was speaking after television screens airing the Jamahiriyah station went blank.

Innocent soldiers killed, surely one does not become a soldier to get ambushed - these are human beings. Somebody is gonna pay for this.

Durbanite78, I agree with you. However these soldiers, human as they may be, had been guarding the TV building that delivers Gaddafi's propaganda and military tactics. It's not like they would spare the revolutionaries if given a chance. War is not as easy as we amagine it to be, sadly.

There's no such thing as "innocent" soldiers. Soldiers are legitimate targets in terms of the rules of engagement for wars.

@slg As always you never stop talking K@K do you?Allday today the Media here in England kept putting to the fore that it's the Rebels or The Libyan Transitional National Council whatever they wanna call themselves that's getting rid of Gaddafi.NATO really takes the world for idiots. They make it out to be that this is the Rebels that's taken over control of Libya and yet we all know it's them,NATO,that's forcing Gadaffi out of power. Why not come out in the first place and tell the world that you NATO,wanted regime change in Libya and nothing else?Don't come ****ing telling the world the Rebels did this or the Rebels done that in toppling Gadaffi. It's you NATO.And when things don't work out a year or two or more after Gadaffi is gone then what NATO another Iraq or Afghanistan type situation? Everybody knows, watching things unfolding in Libya, that British, American and French special forces troops were arriving in the country at the end of February to train rebels.Long before the K@K you see on tv started.A humanitarian hoax was then manufactured with UN Resolution 1973 as a smokescreen or veil with which to camouflage NATO's wanton act of aggression with the Arab World. And lets not forget how corporate media were and still are dutifully regurgitating baseless claims about Gaddafi slaughtering his own people while concocting lies about his regime using western journalists as human shields. Under the R2P mandate,NATO claims it's pushing for Democracy in Lybia...

      marco - 2011-08-22 17:52

Has The Libyan Transitional National Council demonstrated any broad-based public support throughout the country. That is what DEMOCRACY is- majority rule. All you see on tv are Rebels fighting GADAFFI but no majority support from anyone speaking up for the Rebels in large numbers.Yes we all want democracy in Lybia but is that what the majority of Lybians want and have they as yet have said as much?

      MactheKnife - 2011-08-22 17:53

The sensible members of the military have already defected to the popular movement. Those who remained are not innocent -- they are supporters of a dictatorial regime.

      marco - 2011-08-22 18:03

Acts of brutal retaliation were and are carried out by both sides that have killed innocent people, and to claim that Gaddafi was overseeing a deliberate policy to attack innocents even as he battles against the might of NATO and the western-backed rebel forces is brazenly deceptive. The Media never showed their viewers any videos, images and testimony of rebel fighters engaging in massacres and beatings of innocents, including children, have they?It has been universally ignored by the selective corporate media. If the Rebels are driving tanks, flying fighter jets and carrying RPG launchers are they still classed as "protesters" or "civilians" by the Western Media?

      marco, Whatever !!!!

  • Alfred - 2011-08-22 16:25

There are already pics of Gaddafi's blood stained body doing the rounds on the internet but don't take my word for it because it hasn't been verified yet. Could just be a kid with photoshop and lots of free time...

Only RT-Channel can be trusted for a balanced report on Libya. In any event, NATO's plans for another colony in Africa seems to progress. No matter that the Libyan gangs will for decades kill each other for control. As long as NATO/US get THEIR oil, everything is fine :(

Marco, you truly are an idiot. That is all.
