Cape Town – Malawian President Joyce Banda and her
government officials have been placed under local and international travel
restrictions, following the withdrawal of budgetary support by donors, a report
said on Thursday.
Finance Minister Maxwell Mkwezalamba said government
officials, including the president would only be allowed to travel and to attend
critical government engagements, with exception to fully funded trips, Daily
Monitor said.
The European Union warned last month that it will not
release scheduled budget finance to aid-dependent Malawi until the government
deals with a widespread multi-million dollar treasury fraud.
Earlier this year, Malawi announced it lost
about $50m to theft.
Banda's critics have in the past slammed her travel "escapades" saying they did nothing to boost the development of the country.
The report said the travel
restrictions were with immediate effect.
