Paris - Mauritania's president says he will return to his country in a few days, more than a month after he was shot by his guards and was evacuated to France for medical treatment.

Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz appeared in public in Paris on Tuesday for the first time since he left his West African country in October. Aziz met French President Francois Hollande and said, "I expect to return very rapidly, in a few days."

Lawmakers last week demanded answers about his health.

He and Hollande discussed efforts to fight terrorists who control northern Mali.

The 55-year-old Aziz, who came to power in a 2008 coup, was shot on 13 October after failing to stop at a checkpoint outside the capital. He was airlifted to France the next day.
