Johannesburg - The Mauritius parliament has been dissolved, paving the way for early elections, the online newspaper Le Defi reported Tuesday.

Elections will be held on the island before the end of the year, Paul Berenger, head of the Mauritian Militant Movement (MMM), was quoted as saying.

Elections would normally have been due by May 2015.

Analysts linked Monday's dissolution of parliament to the creation of a new alliance between the MMM - until now an opposition party - and Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam's Labour Party.

The alliance is expected to boost Ramgoolam's majority in parliament, where a three-party alliance currently controls 44 out of 70 seats.

Mauritius, with 1.3 million residents, became independent from Britain in 1968. It is located in the Indian Ocean, about 2 000km south-east of the African continent.
