Cape Town - Former deputy president Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka has welcomed an invitation from the leadership of the Congress of the People (Cope) to join its congress national committee.

"Mrs Mlambo-Ngcuka is humbled by the gesture and confidence shown in her by the party," her office said in a statement on Wednesday.

However, Mlambo-Ngcuka was on sabbatical leave and "will therefore for the next two years be frequently out of the country for research and on teaching assignments".

Her travels had "severely limited" her activities and she would not be available for any office bearer's position, as had been speculated in the media.

"Fortunately, this has the support and understanding of Cope," the statement said.

Cope has been plagued by in-fighting in recent weeks, with its former election head, Simon Grindrod, being suspended; and the sudden resignation last week of the party's second deputy president, Lynda Odendaal.
