Gaborone - Botswana police are investigating why a 31-year-old mother of four allegedly cut some fingers off her newborn baby, the Echo newspaper reported on Wednesday.

According to family members, the woman, whose identity could not be disclosed to protect the child, tried to end the baby's life after delivering it at her homestead in Kanye village.

Family member Masego Babotsi said: "The baby was rescued by the grandmother. It was shocking for the baby to be found missing a few fingers."

The accused had apparently given birth to her other children in the homestead without seeking medical help, Babotsi said.

"Even the baby's tongue was wounded arousing fears that the mother has also attempted to chop it off. Other visible wounds on the [baby] were on the head as well as stomach."

The baby was being treated at the Seventh Day Adventist Church Hospital.

The area's police station commander Superintendent Sello Ntwaagae confirmed the incident.

The mother was arrested and likely to be charged with attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm.
