Windhoek - A gay rights group on Thursday condemned a physical assault on a black homosexual after he won a title in the first ever Mr Gay Namibia contest.

Out-Right Namibia (ORN) said it "strongly condemns the homophobic, and what could be a politically motivated attack on the first ever Mr Gay Namibia, Wendelinus Hamutenya".

According to the organisers of the Mr Gay Namibia contest, held at the end of last month, Hamutenya was assaulted in Windhoek on Sunday evening by two men who beat him as he returned home.

Beaten with bottle

"He has laid a charge of assault against his attackers. The men approached him and requested "the money he won at the Mr Gay competition", Joe Gerstmayr, managing director of Mr Gay Namibia said in a separate statement Thursday.

After a short confrontation, one of the attackers kicked Hamutenya to the ground, while the other grabbed his mobile phone and wallet.

They beat him with a bottle on his head, face and ribs, "which saw him hospitalised for observation at a Windhoek private clinic for 24 hours," according to Gerstmayr.

Hamutenya is set to take part in the Mr Gay World 2012 contest in South Africa next April.

Namibia has not passed any laws against gays or lesbians and its constitution forbids discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

Former president and liberation struggle icon Sam Nujoma during his rule had however spoken our strongly against gays and lesbians.

Whilst I dont condone the acts commited against the victim, there is nowhere in the article that suggest this is a homophobic attack. he was attacked by criminals just like any other citizen. if a black man is attacked by white criminals does that mean its a racist attack? if a foreigner is attacked by local theives does that mean its xenophobic attack? the thieves new he had money he won at the gay rights competition, if he had won lotto they would still have attacked him. in my opinion THIS IS NOT A GAY ATTACK unless the article left out information proving otherwise

It would be ironic if the attackers were gay as well, they were two men after all and inlight of this reporting assumption is king.
