Museveni signs Uganda anti-gay bill

2014-02-24 13:18

Entebbe - Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni signed into law on Monday an anti-gay bill that toughens already strict legislation against homosexuals, defying warnings from the United States that relations could be complicated by the new rules.

Museveni's signature will please a staunchly conservative local constituency that is vehemently opposed to homosexuality, but risks alienating Western aid donors.

Museveni signed the bill during a press conference at State House in Entebbe, close to the capital Kampala.

Such a sad day when bigotry wins over common sense. When fear wins over acceptance. Hate over love.

      Gary Guy - 2014-02-24 13:57

And when black were being persecuted in South Africa (human rights abuses) do you still claim that the world should have ignored it?

Jimmy - It is my business. Unlike you I have compassion for my fellow man.

      Cindy - 2014-02-24 14:08

@Jimmy you are a idiot! We are part of Africa of course is it our business!

      Jay Man - 2014-02-24 14:36

Alex - whats your point? I'm not gay but i still think these brainless idiots that sign these "bills" into law are a (sad) joke to humanity.

@Jimmy, remember that next time that Uganda comes hat in hand to the USA and "demands" aid and money...

Bloody religion!!! That should be banned. What a wonderful, peaceful world we would be.

      Kobus Hattingh - 2014-02-24 14:03

The reason why the world is messed up is exactly because of people like you whom disregards Gods law and act as if they are God themselves. Worshipping the creature rather than the creator and all supposedly in the name of love?! There is no love in seeing others going to hell so wake up.

      Maree Van Staden - 2014-02-24 14:57

Nichola... as this became ANOTHER religious discussion on News24... go think about where all the laws came from. It comes from religion... be it Jewish/Muslim/Christian or any other religion... other than Satanism. "Good" human behavior is based on religion believes and laws. It's just funny... the time when people believed and lived according to religion, was the time with the least violence, when people had respect for one another just because they where human, without having to EARN the respect. A time you could actually expect someone to help you when you needed help without payment, and you could help someone with with a thank you afterward. But then we stopped teaching our kinds religion, and we decided we are to wise to believe in any religion... So it is a nice peaceful world we live in now isn't it... less religion, and we have so little crime, far less rapes, far less hatred, far more respect.... don't we...?

      Fortes Fortuna Adiuvat - 2014-02-24 15:09

Religion is the single biggest cause of war in the history of man. Even today, most wars are between Christians and Muslims or different sects of Muslims. Go back in history and you will see. Religion is like politics. No one can abide by the fact that the guy next to him may have a different point of view. You can only insult that person for not seeing things your way. Well, where is the tolerance that MOST religions preach?

      Maree Van Staden - 2014-02-24 15:30

Fortes... people making war and not showing tolerance towards other people is not religions fault... people using a cause to enrich themselves or to justify their actions, does not mean that is what the cause stands for. Hapenis Atheists... Human nature is the biggest cause of conflict and hatred... hiding behind religion...

  • Stephen Mulomba - 2014-02-24 14:00

so you were born gay, guess we should also let the peadophiles that claim they were born gay have rights as well. Ok Im married so if I give into sexual desire and have another woman i'm a cheater if you give into your perveted desire you fight for it to be legal, mmm. Guess we should all live in a world were every body is alowed to give into their desires regardless who are we to judge!!! desire little kids, desire people of the same sex, desire animals I mean all the people making the pervrted desires are human as well arent they....

      Antoine van Wetten - 2014-02-24 14:05

Stephen - You've just proven how uneducated you are in the matter and painting in broad strokes no less. Learn to differentiate before you sit at the grown-ups table.

You lost all credibility when comparing Pedophilia with homosexuality...

      thuli.mbene - 2014-02-24 14:32

Why is that Heinrich? Both are sexual urges which can be controlled.

      Heinrich Spreeth - 2014-02-24 14:40

@Thuli ,yes just like both a matador's cloak and my car are both red.

      thuli.mbene - 2014-02-24 14:46

Are you sure Heinrich? You kinda struck me as a pink Mini Cooper kinda girl.

      Heinrich Spreeth - 2014-02-24 14:52

yeah , my profile pic and name obviously gave away that I am female. Great debating with you! nice comeback!

      thuli.mbene - 2014-02-24 14:55

Not your name, just your obsession with man love.

      Fortes Fortuna Adiuvat - 2014-02-24 15:14

Firstly, a pedophile is not necessarily gay. It is an adult that has sex with a child. And the child does not consent, which makes it rape. Secondly, animals do not choose to sleep with a man (or woman). We force the animal which in my opinion is akin to animal cruelty. If two grown men or women go into their own house and do what they do, as consenting adults, how does that hurt you or society?

      thuli.mbene - 2014-02-24 15:19

Fortes, when they go off into their homes, it doesn't bother anyone. When they start fairying around like it's perfectly natural, and telling my children their behavior is natural, we have a massive problem.

      Fortes Fortuna Adiuvat - 2014-02-24 15:32

There are a great many things I do not want my children to do. I don't want them to smoke, I don't want them to drink too much or do drugs. I don't want them to be disrespectful to women or their elders. I don't want them to shoot people. But I do want them to question things and I do want them to be fair and treat EVERYONE as they would like to be treated. So, I TEACH THEM. We live in a society where not all things are banned. There are differing opinions. Alcohol is a thousand times more destructive than homosexuality ever was. But I teach my children the dangers of alcohol. So, I will teach them that men normally marries woman. But you know what? If my child does turn out gay, will I shun him and ban him from my family? No.

Meme... Really, you really wouldn't have said anything if I did not written a comment...? WHAHAHAHAHA!!! That would have been the first. I didn't even lift my opinion on the matter! I don't agree with the legislation... they are going way overboard on this... but it's that countries decision let them have it. We had apartheid... and we changed it, let them find them selves wrong if they decide that way. PS: you might want to think about it... where does the rules come from that govern us as humans... being good people and showing love and compassion towards one another... Yes... Religion! Be it Christian/Muslim/Jewish ... you might not believe or have any religion, but religion set the laws!

How moral progress hapens We don’t become better merely through good intentions and force of will, just as we don’t usually lose weight or give up smoking merely by wanting to. We use our intelligence. We establish laws, create social institutions, write constitutions, and evolve customs. We manage information and constrain options, allowing our better selves to overcome those gut feelings and appetites that we believe we would be better off without. Yes, we are physical beings, and yes, we are continually swayed by factors beyond our control. But as Aristotle recognized long ago, what’s so interesting about us is our capacity for reason, which reigns over all. If you miss this, you miss almost everything that matters. Antoine van Wetten - 2014-02-24 14:09

Should we bring back apartheid too, since your so keen on discriminating against people who are simply different than yourself?

      Alex Millo - 2014-02-24 14:19

What has apartheid has to do with gays, even apartheid din;t support gay marriages. What apartheid are you talking about?

      Charmaine Sanic - 2014-02-24 16:05

Maluxion Nketle thanks for your comment but I must say I find it quit sunny even with the gay people so I have no idea about where YOUR very dark comes in. Just because you may not understand what gay people are all about does not make it wrong. They eat the same as you, bleed the same as you and do all the other things the same as you except they prefer the same sex, that is the only thing that is different. GOD says do not judge for you will be judged.

Oh! Boy how happy I am. Male is made for female, even Insects, reptiles and animals knows that.

      Antoine van Wetten - 2014-02-24 14:17

You are wrong there; homosexuality is found in over 450 species including insects, reptiles and mammals. Homophobia like yours is only found in 1. So take a guess which one is unnatural. :)

      Kobus Hattingh - 2014-02-24 14:21

Want to read about UNnatural? Read Romans 1. And humans are not animals but custodians of them and plants. Its now Gods Law verses the Law of humans. Guess who wins? God!!!

      thuli.mbene - 2014-02-24 14:23

Antoine. Only one species has clearly advanced thinking and a MORAL compass. I do agree with your assertion that homosexuals are closer to animals however.

      Antoine van Wetten - 2014-02-24 14:29

Thuli - Clearly we haven't advanced far enough to realize that there is nothing immoral about it and we shouldn't take ancient scriptures as truth. Try not to be blinded by hate and educate yourself a bit.

      Tommy Jones - 2014-02-24 14:35

It's cool, because animals did it, and we are animals. Is that what you are trying to say?

      thuli.mbene - 2014-02-24 14:36

I don't pay much attention to the scriptures I am afraid. I was gifted with common sense, simple powers of observation are all that is needed to spot the problem with poo pounders. You can have all the pride parades you want, collect as many deviants as you wish. The size of your group does not change the fact that you are freaks.

  • Koonradie Steyn - 2014-02-24 14:12

Good, the whole world should actually stand against this immoral act,GOD bless uganda.

      Antoine van Wetten - 2014-02-24 14:19

There's nothing immoral about it. If you're currently wearing mixed fabrics than you're just as "sinful". Dont cherry pick the Bible for your own personal view points. Question what you have been taught and educate yourself.

What's amazing is that people think that by voting DA everything is going to be better in this country! Guess what, its gonna get worse irrespective whom wins as both parties hates God. They are all (ANC and DA) FOR homosexuality and abortion. So yes, this country will spiral further down the abyss and murders and violence is going to get A LOT worse. Because they turned their backs on God and rather followed after their own lusts.

To you Kobus Hattingh I say this, you want to throw the bible in front of you feet and say to others here is the bible follow the law of GOD but yet you do not do the same. Just by judging others you already go against what the bible says. I am gay, I believe in GOD and try follow his teachings by not judging you for being straight. OH and while we on the subject of the bible, who says the bible of today is what stood in the original bible because MAN HAS ADAPTED THINGS TO SUIT HIS OWN NEEDS. If GOD did not want me to be this way HE would not have made me this way. The bible speaks of a new nation be careful who is to say that the new nation is not the GAY people. Put that in your pipe and smoke it. I have no ill feeling towards you and what you are so why do you have towards me.

I am an agnostic theist, homophobic, a bit racist and sexist sometimes. I feel that homosexuality damages the fabric of society, especially children. It is counterproductive to the survival of the human race. Same sex relationships give children the impression that being homosexual is good, moral and healthy. According to Christianity, Judaism, Mormonism, Islam and biology it’s wrong, even according to nature its wrong. So what if homosexuality is sometimes found in nature, you as a “evolved human” homosexual should have the capacity and mentality to realise that there is no permanence in your actions. I personally have no problem in co-existing with them as long as they don’t try to push their homosexuality upon the rest of society and act and dress accordingly in public. Gays have a higher incidence of infidelity and now you redefined marriage by changing the uniqueness of true marriage. I have mixed feelings on whether should even be allowed to marry or adopt children of the same gender. It is sad that so many of you accept the lie that you were born that way… as you know you had a choice in the matter when you were younger, remember that day when you sat alone in your room and decided to be gay instead of straight, oh yes now you remember. Thus it’s your choice and it was not chosen for you.
