New DRC offensive against rebels imminent

Kinshasa - The Congolese government says it's only a matter of time before it launches a military offensive against a rebel group that has threatened the country's east for more than two decades.

In an interview with The Associated Press on Friday, presidential adviser Seraphin Ngwej hinted that military action against The Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, or FDLR, was imminent.

He says Congo's government is determined "more than ever" to fight the group.

The FDLR was formed by the remnants of Hutus from Rwanda who were responsible for the 1994 genocide there. They sought refuge and have added to their ranks over the years, attacking Congolese villages and killing an untold number of civilians.

The threat posed by the FDLR also gave rise to other fearsome rebel groups.
