Maradi - Niger on Wednesday began three days of mourning after the small West African country lost dozens of soldiers and civilians during clashes with Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram.

At least 2 000 of the Nigeria-based insurgents killed 46 soldiers and 36 residents during an attack on Karamga Island on the Nigerien side of Lake Chad last weekend, said Defence Minister Hassoumi Massoudou.

Fourty-two soldiers are reported missing and nine others were wounded, added the minister.

The army killed more than 150 Boko Haram fighters during the attack, said Massoudou.

Boko Haram, which seeks to establish a state with its very strict interpretation of Islamic law, has regularly infiltrated Niger, Chad and Cameroon.

The group, which had controlled towns in north-eastern Nigeria, has been losing ground to the Nigerian army.

More than 14 000 people are estimated to have been killed by the insurgents since 2009.
