Niamey - Officials in Niger's capital say an overnight fire ravaged the city's main market.

Fire fighting commander Abdoulaye Bako said fire-fighters battled the blaze all night on Wednesday in the heart of Niamey's market.

The fire department did not give a cause for the blaze. Bako said about 500 market shops were destroyed. Police guarded the market on Thursday morning to deter looters.

Officials did not say anyone was killed in the fire.
