Nigeria declares state of emergency

2014-08-08 19:34

Abuja - Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan declared a national state of emergency on Friday over the Ebola outbreak in Africa's most populous country, and he approved $11.6m of emergency funds to contain it.

Nigeria has confirmed seven cases of Ebola since a man fell sick on arrival from Liberia, two of whom have died. Several dozens of people who came into contact with the man are under surveillance.

Now SA is also in serious danger

      Joseph Shange - 2014-08-08 20:29

Lets hope the Nigerian Druglords keep themselves in check when they enter SA.

      Anthoula Joshua - 2014-08-08 23:20

If only Nigeria could just control the virus and spread it under Boko Haram and the drug lords only. That would solve serious African problems.

tel me, why are flights still allowed to these areas! this is the beginning of a epidemic! or the beginning of the end

      Deepandsoulfulhouse DjVido Buka - 2014-08-08 20:16

I Agree SAA should suspend flight to West Africa, If what we have seen recently is anything to go by, this is a highly contagious disease.

      FastnEasy Loans - 2014-08-08 20:20

Yes Flight should be suspended, At least until there is some calm after the storm

      blackmarlene - 2014-08-08 22:02

If the disease is spread by bodily fluids how did one man infect so many?

      Anthoula Joshua - 2014-08-08 23:18

Marlene, Sweat is also a bodily fluid. If you touch the infected person alive or dead or even wash your hands in the same bucket of water, you can contract the virus. It is not like HIV where you need semen or blood only. Even sneezing on you. That is why families of infected and health care workers are most at risk. In Africa most people do not have running water and have to share the same bucket of water to wash in.

Africa must consider to establish its own Continental emergency fund. Emergency fund for Africa ( EFA)

      Anthoula Joshua - 2014-08-08 23:23

Sean, you are the most racist individual on this planet. Remember a disease like this does not choose skin colour. Careful.

....and what about the hundreds of thousands of South Africans living in Nigeria? Will they be allowed back to SA?

      Anthoula Joshua - 2014-08-08 23:25

It is a simple temperature test. If you have a fever you go into quarantine until they know you are ok. High fever is the first sign. More people die in Africa because of Malaria. It is just not contagious.
