Nigeria moves to ban gay marriage

2011-11-22 13:14

Lagos - Legislators in Nigeria are trying to ban gay marriage, and activists fear the effort could increase discrimination in Africa's most populous nation.

Under the measure, couples who marry could face up to three years in jail, and witnesses or anyone who helps couples marry could be sentenced to five years behind bars.

Human Rights Watch and other activists say if the bill passes, gay and lesbians could face even greater discrimination and violence.

Homosexuality is already technically illegal in Nigeria, a country that may be evenly divided between Christians and Muslims but is nearly universally opposed to homosexuality.

In the areas in Nigeria's north where Islamic Shariah law is enforced, gays and lesbians can face death by stoning.

    Makes no sense at all

      Dean Kenad - 2011-11-22 14:21

U dont av a functional brain so it wouldnt make sense to you

      Fred - 2011-11-22 20:22

@Dean Kenad What a highly intelligent comment you have made. Says a lot about you.

      Rob - 2011-11-24 12:54

Well Dean, let me explain to you why my disfunctional brain cannot make sense out of this. Firstly, sexual preference has nothing to do with anyone else except the first and second party involved. Secondly, you cannot legislate human development / change and by doing so you end up alienating certain segments of the population for no other reason other than homophobia. Thirdly and most importantly, my brain might not function but looking at your spelling you may be a few cells short of a functional brain yourself. Keep it real, peace!

How about they ban their citizens from being expat drug dealers?

  • goyougoodthing - 2011-11-22 13:56

Actually stupid isn't the word, disgusting is more true. As far as I think we have come we only have to look at Nigeria as an example of intolerance.

      goyougoodthing - 2011-11-22 14:07

Unlike it as much as you want, you are the bigot.

  • Ron - 2011-11-22 14:02

      Blink - 2011-11-22 14:38

Yes Tefong but you have no problem with these countries receiving handouts from the West - that off course is part of African culture.

      alyn.adams - 2011-11-22 14:39

And the vast research on which you base your sweeping generalisation would be?

      mbossenger - 2011-11-22 14:40

      Blink - 2011-11-22 14:42

I think gays are the last of Nigeria's problems.

      Paul - 2011-11-22 14:21

      You mean 'least' ... ?

      Dean Kenad - 2011-11-22 14:22

And the biggest of your problems

      Blink - 2011-11-22 14:36

Shame Dean what's wrong. You feeling threatened by the gays? Maybe you're one yourself. You know what they say...

      mbossenger - 2011-11-22 14:42

What's wrong, Dean? What is homosexuality such a problem?

  • chizgal - 2011-11-22 14:40

Funny how hate, judgement and discrimination is so high lately on this earth yet people want peace....gays and lesbians aren't hurting anyone, they're living their lives. Ban it, that won't change who they are. Yes, they'll live in fear but at the end, they'll live their lives. #aghasted#

  • GAMMAT - 2011-11-22 19:28

They should rather focus on calling back their criminal citizens from countries like SA.
