92 Nigerians killed trying to get spilled fuel

Niger Delta - At least 92 people including women and children were killed on Thursday after a gasoline tanker crashed on the east-west road in Nigeria's oil-producing Niger Delta and caught fire as people tried to scoop up fuel, a Reuters witness said.

"Early this morning a tanker loaded with petrol fell in Okogbe and people trooped to the scene obviously to scoop the spilled fuel and suddenly there was fire resulting in casualties," Rivers State police spokesperson Ben Ugwuegbulam said.

Ugwuegbulam said it was too early to give a casualty figure but a Reuters witness at the scene counted 92 dead bodies of men, women and children.

Hundreds of people crowded around as soldiers and emergency workers lifted bodies into ambulances and police trucks. The fuel tanker was a pile of smouldering ash, twisted metal and melting tyres.

Crashes are common on Nigeria's pot-holed and poorly maintained roads, and in a region where most people live on less than $2 a day the chance to collect spilling petrol is too much of a temptation, despite the high risk of fires.

The east-west road, which runs across the oil-producing region, has been scheduled for development for almost a decade and money is allocated for it in the budget each year.

Nigeria, Africa's biggest oil producer, is plagued by corruption and inefficiency. Most years only about half budgeted programmes are implemented.

Sorry for the lives lost, but jeez - dont they realize the danger ?

well i'll be damned - I must say... you know your movies !!

Thanks for the kind words Johnnys..What i am find interesting is that whenever a tragedy happens in Nigeria, white South Africans are always the first to sympathize and offer their condolences. Our South African black "fake" brother however laugh at our tragedies. It just goes to prove what white South Africans have been trying to tell the rest of the world for so long : Black South Africans are lazy barbarians who deserve no sympathy or allegiance. I no longer have black south African friends as i find them very "jealous" and primitive in their thinking. We Nigerian professionals now know they are our enemies and not our brethren. The only South African friends i have now are whites, coloreds and Indians because contrary to what the media portrays whites are very kind people when you get to know them.I want Whites South Africans to know one thing : You are welcome in Nigeria any day.Whenever you get tired of these black barbarians you are unfortunate to share a country with ,feel free to come to Nigeria. Many of the farmers who were chased out of Zimbabwe now live in Nigeria running new farms there in peace. You see we Nigerians do not believe in handouts we hustle to make ends.No one in Nigeria has an entitlement mentality like these spoil B.E.E brats in SA. Black South Africans are deceitful.Whenever they want our votes e.g world cup bid and now AU chairmanship bid they com crawling to us like worms but once they get what they want they stab us in the back.Quite typical.

@omonaija The words you write are so true my brother. I have had the pleasure of meeting some Nigerians who stay here in South Africa and they are wonderful people. You will always hear our local blacks talking about Ubuntu but it's just a mythical concept just like King Arthur and the round table. I've never seen a local black person being kind to another black person. Instead they seen to derive pleasure from other peoples suffering.

"I've never seen a local black person being kind to another black person. Instead they seen to derive pleasure from other peoples suffering." How could you possibily know when you do not speak any indigenous language, never listen to indeginous radio/tv and only interact with us in a master and servant relationship. @naija To see the mote in another's eye and not the beam in one's own.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-07-12 21:40

Fred.warren.986 As a White person, I can only say the following to you; What a load of CRAP !!! And to Omonaija; If Black South Africans are 'fake' 'jealous' 'lazy barbarians' 'brats' 'deceitful' and 'worms' Than I must ask you one question: What the heck are you doing here ??

      omo.naija.750 - 2012-07-12 22:19

@AnthonyfromAfrica -The 90 people who died are poor villagers who have never being to SA talk less of committing any crime in SA so why hate them and mock them? The morons who generalize and hate all Nigerians forget that Nigeria is Country like any other that has law abiding citizens as well as criminals. The last estimates of our population within Nigeria is 167 million and another 20 million living overseas. We are the largest group of African migrants. The idiots who hate Nigerians however do not put our population into consideration when they are making their ill informed comments. They also pretend not to notice the thousand of Nigerian professionals who are actively contributing to this country. Instead they shed their spotlight on the underworld specifically the part run by Nigerian criminals in order to satisfy their pervertic obsession with hating Nigerians. They successfully brainwash themselves ,their friends & relatives into loathing Nigerians and everything Nigerian.Only people very low IQ do that so it does not really bother the Nigerian community that much.

Very tragic indeed. Poor children , God bless. Imagine how poor/hungary these kids are that they would actually take such a high risk in order to make some cash probably just to buy something to eat. May Allah shower his mercy upon them.

Yeah a "stupid" nation that is quickly becoming an investment magnet and about to overtake SA.Keep hating while we Nigerians along with foreign investors continue to build and strengthen our rapidly evolving economy.I wonder what you and your kin will do when all the white tax payers migrate from SA to other suitable countries. There will no more freebies then and the gravy train will come to an abrupt halt,LOL! Remember Zimbabwe??? Yeah true story!
