Abuja - Suspected Boko Haram militants surrounded a village on Thursday in north-eastern Nigeria and started shooting while chanting, "God is great", in the latest of a series of attacks in which towns are sprayed with gunfire and houses burned.

The militants, who were carrying arms that included rocket-propelled grenade launchers, arrived in 30 vehicles in Bajoga in Gombe state, residents told the newspaper Daily Trust.

One resident was quoted as saying that the insurgents targeted public buildings, including schools, police stations and local government offices.

The number of casualties were unknown, but the shooting and explosions created pandemonium as some residents fled the town while others were trapped in their homes.

A military helicopter was dispatched to attack the militants, residents said.

Boko Haram aims to establish an Islamist state in northern Nigeria and has terrorised the region for five years.
