Johannesburg - International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane arrived in Lesotho on Tuesday ahead of the launch of the SADC election observer mission.

"Minister Nkoana-Mashabane is representing President Jacob Zuma, chairperson of the SADC organ on politics, defence and security co-operation," the international relations department said in a statement.

The organ is responsible for the maintenance of peace and stability in the region.

Lesotho is expected to hold its general elections on 28 February.

Election observers would be deployed to all the districts in Lesotho after the observer mission's launch.

Earlier in February, Zuma hosted a delegation from the coalition government led by Tom Thabane. Zuma was acting in his capacity as chair of the Southern African Development Community troika organ on politics, defence and security co-operation.

The delegation raised concerns over security, the violation of the Maseru facilitation and security accords, and discussed a request for SADC to help deliver a credible election.

The election will take place two years sooner than originally expected, as agreed in the accords.
