Rome - Pirates on Tuesday hijacked an Italian chemical and oil tanker off the coast of Oman in an area where there are frequent attacks by Somali pirates, officials said.

"Our vessel Enrico Ievoli has been hijacked... Presently we are unable to release a statement due to lack of information," the Naples-based owner of the ship, Marnavi, said in an emergency notice on its website.

The foreign ministry confirmed the report. "The ministry is in contact with the ship owner and the navy," a spokesperson told AFP.

The ship, which measures 138m in length, was rescued from a potential hijacking in 2006 after an Italian warship intervened.

Unfortunately there is no political will to stop this madness. Why not arm these ships and put trained soldiers on them. Then blast the pirates out of the water when they attack.
