Johannesburg - The country's new police chief Bheki Cele "vividly understands" the crime situation in South Africa, police union Popcru said on Thursday.

"He has demonstrated this understanding and distinguished himself as a pragmatist in KwaZulu-Natal," said Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) spokesperson Benzi ka-Soko in a statement.

He welcomed Cele's appointment and said the union was looking forward to working with him as he had some impressive crime-fighting methods.

"We are particularly impressed by his no-nonsense attitude towards criminals and the strong messages he has sent to the criminal underworld," said Ka-Soko.

"Popcru is looking forward to working with him and his team in the crime-fighting project as elucidated through the government's anti-crime strategic plan."

The union called on South Africans to join hands with Cele to help fight the scourge of crime.
