Cairo - One student was killed in clashes between students backing Egypt's ousted president Mohammed Morsi and opponents in Cairo, state television reported on Friday.

The violence erupted overnight when pro-Morsi students blocked a main road outside their university hostel in the eastern Cairo district of Nasr City, an act that infuriated the area's residents, the broadcaster reported, citing a police spokesperson.

Both sides fired birdshot at one another, causing fatal wounds to the student, the official said.

The fighting came a day after the military-backed government declared Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist group. Under Egyptian law, terrorism-related charges carry the death penalty.

A Brotherhood-led alliance has called for massive street protests dubbed a "week of rage" starting on Friday against the government's decision.

Hundreds of people have been killed in Egypt's violence since July when the army deposed Morsi, the country's first democratically elected president.
