Rebels attack Libya government HQ

2012-05-08 16:16

Tripoli - Former Libyan rebels angry over unpaid stipends opened fire on the headquarters of the interim government on Tuesday after surrounding the building.

"Many men encircled the building and opened fire against it with weapons including anti-aircraft cannon," a government employee present during the attack told AFP.

There was no immediate report of casualties.

Several trucks mounted with anti-aircraft guns surrounded the building in central Tripoli, blocking traffic, witnesses said.

Government spokesperson Nasser al-Manaa said the defence minister was negotiating with the fighters, who "came in protest over [unpaid] stipends," referring to a reward scheme for those who fought against Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011.

This was to be expected , weapons in the hands of radical thinking factions each with a different view is the result of an euphoria type of believe that might or freedom by the barrel of a gun is better than a democratic order

lets not forget who armed the rebels, backed them financially(breeding ground for greed and corruption) and gave them military assistance! took the countrries wealth and when they had enough they left the place in turmoil! 3 cheers to uncle sam!!!

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-05-08 20:11

Rudiwaan, This is sooo pathethically childish, GROW UP What are you on about ....???..."took the counties wealth" ????? The ONLY one who is taking big time, oil out of Libya is CHINA, on THEIR terms !!!!!!! Educate yourself first, the USA has NEVER had any interest in Libya !!!

      Sipho - 2012-05-08 21:47

aaahh, poor Anthony or 21stcentury or what ever it is that he is calling himself these days. but anyway, you still cant admit the truth can you "21st century anthony african"? still wont admit that the anglo's who overthrew gadaffi backed the wrong horse can you? what lies will you post once the body count rises and all out civil war between the AL-QAEDA REBELS and the true citizens of libya clash once and for all? where is wrong said fred?

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-05-08 23:23

Sipho-aka-thisuselessbrotherfullofhatred Before you come and make some dumb comment here, why dont you sort out the hatred on your doorstep. Or did the US authaurities threaten to arrest you ??????

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-09 03:51

Ah, Rudiwaan, let's just be mentally lazy and play the blame-the-US game, shall we. Why would you want Libyans to continue to be oppressed by a mad dictator? They were kept in an infantile position by "Big Brother Leader", the self-appointed King of Kings of Africa and couldn't even vote. When they wanted to vote, he killed, detained, tortured and raped tens of thousands of them, using their own military. He stole billions of dollars from them too. Why would you want this for them? Why. In any event, as Anthony has pointed out, the US had, and has, little interest in Libyan oil and played only a minor role in Nato's operations there, which operations were directed purely at eliminating Gaddafi's capability to destroy Libyans and Libya. If you want a clearer picture of what would have happened had the UN not intervened, look at Syria. So, best to exercise your brain more, Rudiwaan. Being lazy and playing the boring old blame-game gets us nowhere.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-09 03:53

Sipho, the "Anglos that overthrew Gaddafi" were actually Libyans who wanted to vote, and who he was killing, maiming, torturing and raping by the tens of thousands. It's sad and disappointing that you would want to deny Libyans basic human rights.

      Vandross - 2012-05-09 20:38

@Fraser He raped tens of thousands of them. Woahh!!! I don't know if anyone can do that

  • ntunjab - 2012-05-08 17:45

There's no more al-Qaddaffi y are they still acting this way?

      rudiwaan.joseph - 2012-05-08 18:33

thats because 'al -Qaddaffi' wasnt the real reason for them acting like that. Until a foreing country told the Libiyans otherwise and offered them backing, money and political power!obviously in return for endless supply of cheaply priced oil! Well done uncle sam. Is this the result you were aiming for?

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-09 03:56

Rudiwaan, Rudiwaan, Rudiwaan, now the pseudo-victim game. Did someone pay the Tunisian street-vendor who immolated himself out of sheer frustration at the years of oppression too, which sparked the Arab Spring? Clearly, you're out of touch with what has been happening in the Middle East. And unfortunately you're working against the freedom from decades of oppression the people in that region so desperately want.

  • AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-05-08 19:02

After 41 years of tyranny by a mentally disturbed terrorist, this country is going through a difficult phase. Thank GOD, the Libyans don't have to rely on the SICK BS coming from out of Africa. They would rather stick to Europe and to China, because that's where their future is !!! The Libyans are so sick and tired of this childish pathetic CRAP , about this PSYCHOPATH and hos EVIL SCUM sons , that TERRORIZED them for Four decades !!!

      Sipho - 2012-05-08 21:50

let it go "21st century african anthoLOOny" see above post!

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-09 03:57

Sipho, see the above post too. And perhaps take a trip to Libya, talk to Libyans who are about to vote for the first time ever.

  • Moleseng Malepe - 2012-05-08 19:40

Jalil nd his co puppets of the Western Devils of White House r under serge, Gaddafi rules frm his grave.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-05-08 19:56

If you really find it necessarily to spew out some anti US hatred, its ok, but than don't talk BS like this. You embarrass yourself Rather comment on an car accident story !!!!

      Sipho - 2012-05-08 21:52

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-09 03:58

As a South African, you should be ashamed that you're supporting the oppression of Libyans by an unelected dictator.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-09 05:29

Sipho, did "the truth" also come to light in South Africa immediately after Apartheid, as the country went through its transition? This lasted years. Why are you so hell-bent on sabotaging the freedom and human righted Libyans have worked so hard to achieve,

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-09 17:23

To you Patrick. You only have authority to speak for yourself.
