Report - Harare 4th worst city to live in

2012-08-30 22:35

Harare - An independent research group says Zimbabwe's capital is the world's fourth-worst city to live in, based on daily hardships and political risk. Cities in war zones are excluded from the "livability" index.

The British-based Economist Intelligence Unit put Harare 137th out of 140 cities surveyed and gave it a 39.4 rating on a scale to 100 for ideal urban conditions. In its report available on Thursday, Harare ranked marginally better than Lagos in Nigeria, Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea and Dhaka, Bangladesh.

In cities with a score of 50 or less "most aspects of living are severely restricted," it said. The study aims to help businesses calculate hardship allowances for executives and employees.

The group said Harare rates poorly in health care, general infrastructure and prospects for political instability.

Interesting to see no cities of the 'Evil Imperialist West' among the bottom-dwellers - makes you think does it not...

      john.pope.75491 - 2012-08-31 13:03

And they spent money to work that out..?? Bob must be very proud and we are working very hard to snatch that 4th position away from them...

yeah but did they take into account its great weather, it has more sunshine than any other city....oh and it also has the friendliest people.

      jo.barton.92 - 2012-08-31 07:04

Try feeding your family with warm sunshine and a friendly smile and see how far you get.

      nigel.vanysendyk - 2012-08-31 10:57

yea & it has the best tasting dirt, which can serve as a nutritional alternative to food in event of imminent starvation.

      claire.davies.1840070 - 2012-09-01 06:06

That's not what a global company investigates when they are doing researches like this!!! Weather - well some people like the snow! Friendliest people - well who are you comparing them to? To me, the Irish are the friendliest.

  • brent.goldwyer - 2012-08-30 23:31

Well done Mugabe, kill a few more countrymen and you might make first place. Time to face the music Bob,your judgement time is near

  • Taris Mante - 2012-08-30 23:42

i stay in Harare and i disagree. Zimbabwe has been through a lot but to call its capital the fourth worst city to live in the world is offensive. people who live in harare are feel more at peace than they would in most African cities. we have failing infrastructure, healthcare and yes, businesses do struggles but are we any different from most countries in Africa?! Such negative media attention only causes further deterioration of a ready fragile nation, trying to get back on its feet.

      juannepierre - 2012-08-31 03:20

Yeah, it's awful. Its by far worse than any other neighboring country- to SA. But if you like it that's ok, I however don't even recommend zim as a travel destination let alone Harare. botswana, Namibia and Mozambique get my vote way before zim.

      attie.gerber.1 - 2012-08-31 06:31

taris i agree with you as i travel to harare quite frequently on business. persoanly i belief their are worst places in south africa. talk about health care. i went to a govt clinic last week and they had no pain killers to give me as they have no stock. they even do not have insuline for diabetes patients etc etc. i have never been physically harmed in any african country i visited, but have been hi jacked and rob in south africa. to me south africa is no better than harare or even worse

      Johan - 2012-08-31 08:52

Taris. If you use only Africa as your measure the sure Harare won’t be last on the list but it would still not make the top.

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-08-31 09:07

juannepierre - the Moz cops victimise white people, I no longer visit Moz. Apparently Zim is even worse - especially at the border, so I won't go there either. Namibia and Bots are the best places to visit, Bots is just too expensive.

      raymond.romans.5 - 2012-08-31 10:15

Chumscrubber, they have been told to lay off. I have driven right up to Nampula and back with one speeding fine. Also to Inhambane and back without so much as a road block to harass me.

      nigel.vanysendyk - 2012-08-31 10:47

the survey is not based on safety or peace, but on health care, daily hardships, infrastructure & political stability, maybe if you guys stopped tolerating Mugabe & Zanu PF' s dictatorship you could improve these things & get back on your feet.

      harald.voney - 2012-08-31 12:12

It all depends on your standard mate, and your perspective... you just don't see the sh#t anymore...

      coursieres - 2012-08-31 17:16

@airborne68. Have you been around Maputo recently? I won't go back to Maputo again. Between the beachfront and the city centre you will go through at least 2 roadblocks. They will take your passport and won't give it back until you pay something. Refuse to give them your passport and they threaten to take you down to the station. Having a local with you and being able to speak Portuguese doesn't help. I agree, out in the countryside no problems whatsoever. In fact the Police are very polite and friendly. Keep clear of Maputo.

  • Gerald Jordaan - 2012-08-31 00:34

I would have thought that Harare is the worst city to live in given that that fothermucker Mogabe also lives there !!

      juannepierre - 2012-08-31 03:20

Then you haven't been to Lagos

      Wally Walters - 2012-08-31 07:16

      I wonder why

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-08-31 09:08

Lagos is apparently the closest you can get to hell on earth.

      gerhard.muller.988 - 2012-08-31 14:19

I hear that Kinshasa isn't much of a walk in the park either. Not that I have been there.

  • AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-08-31 04:25

Harare is Africa's worst city !! You might get mugged sooner in Lagos, but if you are in the center of Harare, and you will tell your friend, loud enough for others to hear, that mugabe is a thug, you have more chance , than in any other city in Africa, to get arrested, beaten up, raped and tortured!! Tyranny at its worst!!!!

  • rumbidzai.motsi.3 - 2012-08-31 06:55

I am sorry but this is not true.

      Wally Walters - 2012-08-31 07:10

      I know the truth hurts

      claire.davies.1840070 - 2012-09-01 06:01

      why is it not true?

  • max.maxwell - 2012-08-31 07:22

      jento.dayisi - 2012-08-31 10:56

That stupid fool , he just needs someone to shut him off for good

  • robert.starke.98 - 2012-08-31 07:58

Typical - a true legacy of the ape called Mugabe, it took 100 years to build the country, and it took Mugabe 20 odd years to stuff it up !!

  • glenview.rungano - 2012-08-31 08:44

what do you expect from a former colonial master propaganda machine?

      michael.barns.1 - 2012-08-31 09:07

ummm when your colonial masters left the city it was in great shape and people loved it... your black masters ran it into the ground and left it in the state it is now. Ohh wait, thats every African city, take a look at Kinshasa 50 years ago, was beautiful, then all you thieving corrupt idiots took over and just look at it now!

      nigel.vanysendyk - 2012-08-31 10:39

hahaha, still blaming the colonialists from 30 years ago, shame

  • pws69 - 2012-08-31 09:00

In my visits in Africa, Freetown, Kinshasa, and Luanda rate worse in my opinion. Haven't read the report, but since it is limited to 140 countries out of a possible 196, maybe the report should read out of 140 evaluated countries. Not to distract from the fact the Mugarbage has done a really good job of getting it that low.

  • dirk.naude.12 - 2012-08-31 09:31

4th place eh, still room for approvement hey Bob?

  • punungwe - 2012-08-31 09:36

When you live in Harare 1. No one is going to hold you up at knifepoint in broad daylight in a busy street. 2. No one is going to walk up to you at a robot point a gun at your head and tell you to get out of your car 3. The newspaper you read won't be carrying a murder story every day. In the whole of Zimbabwe there are about 600 murders a year not 20plus murders a day 4. No one will break into your house and kill you. Even if someone breaks in they will run as soon as you detect them, not hold you hostage

      charles.gregory.7906 - 2012-08-31 09:42

Wow that sounds amazing! Is this really true?

      denis.dendrinos - 2012-08-31 09:54

long as you belong to Zanu..

      sharon.houghton.984 - 2012-08-31 10:15

Thats because most of the people who do that live here my friend! Sad but true!

      jento.dayisi - 2012-08-31 10:58

      claire.davies.1840070 - 2012-09-01 06:00

  • denis.dendrinos - 2012-08-31 09:51

Oh please - imperialist white monopoly rubbish! Everyone knows uncle BOB has done a smashing job!

  • sharon.houghton.984 - 2012-08-31 10:13

I think its a crying shame that such a beautiful land and such lovely people have been ruined by trash that have no right to be running the country. It must be awful to have to leave what you know and owned and have to go to another country with nothing. I just hope whoever gets to run Zimbabwe in the future can pull it back to somehting like it used to be and its people can hold thier heads up high again!

  • don.quioxte.3 - 2012-08-31 10:23

You go Bob. No1 is not out of reach, but with penis-head's help Jozi won't be far behind.

  • nigel.vanysendyk - 2012-08-31 10:34

Dear Mugabe & Zanu supporters (also supporters of ANCYL & Malema) seems that this promised land that you all keep on talking about is not really going to happen huh, looks like whats little left of Zimbobwe is going down the tubes, 2 million people about to starve to death, 3 million Zimbabwean refugees in SA, & Harare the 4th worst city IN THE WORLD to live in, what a great success his land grap & mine takeovers have been, keep flapping your lips fools

  • punungwe - 2012-08-31 11:09

And another fact, Harare and its neighbouring town of Chitungwiza suffered their worst decline in the past 4 years while being run by MDC councils

  • clint.skinner - 2012-08-31 11:30

I have lived in South Africa and many other places in the world. Nothing beats my quality of life in Harare! Sorry guys you have it all wrong... I choose to live here, can you say the same?

Dear News24 reporter. Don't you think it would have been nice to know how our own cities are doing? Get off your lazy butt, stop cutting and pasting, do some research and let us know.

      claire.davies.1840070 - 2012-09-01 06:07

obviously your own cities are doing ok!

      fleetwood.harrison - 2012-09-02 19:20

read this with interest,I love harare dearly, but I am amazed theree are still people who thinki Zanu is doing a good job and that their policies are the right ones. Please Please Samuel and others that think in the same way, stand up for yourselves, stop being taken in by the lunacy of your dictator.Demand better.... Terrible things happen when good men and women do nothing.

  • Va Kossam Tawanda Musundire - 2013-05-16 12:21

Harare at the moment is not as good as it should be l agree. But it is not that bad either.. One of the few third world cities without shack dwellers. But very soon it will be the place to be and we will be there to make the visa so hard to get.
