New York - The UN Security Council says Somalia's transition must end on 20 August and is expressing "serious concern" that deadlines are being missed.

The council is urging the country's transitional government and political leaders to redouble efforts to complete outstanding requirements.

Somalia has had transitional administrations since 2004, but it has not had a functioning central government since 1991.

The Security Council announced the 20 August deadline in February and called on all parties to implement a roadmap aimed at improving security, governance and reconciliation, and creating a constitution.

The council welcomed the selection of 825 members of the National Constituent Assembly which met on Wednesday.

But in a press statement on Wednesday it expressed concern at delays and called for an end to misappropriation of funds and improved financial transparency.
