Khartoum - South Sudan has acquired its own telephone dialing code, the telecommunications minister said on Wednesday, after proclaiming formal independence from the north on Saturday.

"The ITU [International Telecommunication Union] made it in a very nice way that will make it very easy for the citizens of the Republic of South Sudan to recognise this number," Madut Biar Yel was quoted as saying by the independent Sudan Radio Service.

"They got their independence in 2011 and the country code is 211," he added.

Telephone operators have been given six months to change their configurations.

The flag of South Sudan is due to be raised at the United Nations on Thursday, when it becomes the world body's newest member, after the Security Council recommended its admission on Wednesday.
