Addis Ababa - A South Sudanese military official says rebels are trying to march on the national capital from Bor, a town under the control of rebel forces.

Military spokesperson Philip Aguer said on Thursday that the central government had sent in reinforcements from Juba, which is 120km from Bor, the capital of Jonglei state.

Aguer said there was heavy fighting going on and that rebels are forcibly recruiting and arming reluctant civilians.

The fighting has overshadowed efforts in neighbouring Ethiopia to bring both sides to the negotiating table.

Peace talks between the warring factions were expected to start later on Thursday in Addis Ababa.
