Southern Africa food shortages worsen

2012-10-20 18:04

Harare - The United Nations deputy humanitarian chief says food shortages are "a chronic problem" in southern Africa and more than 5.5 million people in eight countries need aid this year, a 40 percent increase compared to 2011.

Catherine Bragg, winding up a five-day southern Africa trip on Saturday, said worsening food shortages are the result of drought or floods and rising world food prices.

In Zimbabwe, 1.6 million people are affected by food shortages and many rural families have begun selling village livestock, often kept as a symbol of status and wellbeing, to cope with the "dire situation," Bragg said.

A decade of seizures of commercial farms has disrupted food production in Zimbabwe, a former regional breadbasket.

Food shortages are also particularly acute in Lesotho, Malawi and Swaziland, Bragg said.

Mmmmm people are already complaining about food shortages well good luck, due to your horrific actions against hard working farmers in Southern-Africa, and your incompetent government to stop farm murders, a hell of a lot of us farmers are now farming in other countries. Your hatred for the farmers that actually grow food and indirectly feed you are still going to cause you massive bitter days and your bitter days have started. DO NOT BITE THE HAND THAT FEEDS YOU.

And Malema says SA can learn from Zimbabwe; yes indeed 101 in how to turn a country from a net exporter of food and seed grain to how to be a perennially asking for food aid for a starving people. This has nothing to do with the rains because we have had dry periods before. The commercial farmers knew how to work in that environment and were committed to the land; not this bunch of weekend farmers who use the farms as weekend retreats for braais.

The more white farmers they chase off the farms, the more serious the food shortages will become. And very soon those shortages will also hit SA!

      john.thelps - 2012-10-20 18:25

And they are to stupid to realize it!! They would rather all die of hunger than admit they need the whites man help

I agree 100%. We are going the same root as Zimbabwe. Petrol shortages, food shortages, medical, schools etc. We are taxed heavily and are paying vat through our ears. And what is happening to our money.? Zuma gets a village and a moerse house. Workers at mines strike, truck drivers strike. Etc, etc. farmers are being killed and the government wants to claim farms. Does it sound familiar?

AFRICA........Start realising ......If you can not feed them do not breed them !

  • Molefe Motshwane - 2012-10-20 18:33

why South Africa is not affected by food shortage. work of a white men leave its bad track. we give land to white men we r going to be poor for ever and ever my fellow Africans

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-10-20 18:40

We used to be an exporter of food, now we import - part of the reason why the prices are so high. We pay int'l prices for food on an emerging market income, keeping farmers in other countries afloat and those farmers are heavily subsidised by their govts to ensure their people are fed. Our farmers are not subsidised at all and are expected to compete in a very unfair market. We are already affected.

      Racist scumbag.

      chris.summers.3954 - 2012-10-20 19:04

I will try put this into terms you can comprehend...when white man farm in Zim, everyone eats, now you kick out white man, now you don't eat, and hope that another white man comes and gives you food aid.

  • chris.summers.3954 - 2012-10-20 18:42

So there was plenty of food a few years back, then the white farmers got kicked out. The land was then given to africans to farm, and be merry on their supposed ancestral land without a neo-colonialist white anti-revolutionary pig in sight. A dream come true for blacks across southern africa, finally the shackles imposed by whitie have been removed and you can determine your own destiny! Well, seems it didn't quite work out that way, and the west has to now send food aid to feed everyone again. Where would you lot be without those hated pinkies taking charge of things, you can't even manage to feed yourselves

OH Lord save us. the Black mind still is oppressed by themselves ofcoz even thou claiming to be free. why Mzansi?????

  • mshiniboys - 2012-10-20 22:03

Southern Africa does not refer to South Africa only.that is why you will find sd,lesotho and so on being mentioned in this context.in this particular story zimbabwe is highlighted.food shortages in this country can only be caused by commodification of it by the typicaly selfish whites who stock pile it for retailers.that food belongs to all who work the farms.

      mark.a.fysh - 2012-10-21 01:37

      mshiniboys. Bwahahahaha!

  • hannah.p.mostert - 2012-10-21 03:12

Mshiniboys what drugs are you on?

  • cois.dorfling.3 - 2012-10-21 08:08

Me Bragg misses the point completely...either to be politically correct or being manipulated because i do not think she could be that stupid....the sole problem of our food shortage in southern africa is the poor forward plannng, policy making and their subsequent stealing of taxpayers money amongst black politicians and black leaders...

  • cois.dorfling.3 - 2012-10-21 08:18

Since the fall of colonialism in other words independence of all sub saharan countries, apart from namibia and botswana....the rest have gone one way only and thats down hill....zambia and moz are slowly coming back cause they have let the white man back to start up economic growth again....in south africa, with 1 farmer or his family member being killed every 3 days i fear the ship is still thinking.....we need economist to run our country as a large healthy business and not communistic socialists.....which is precisely what the useless thieving brainwashing ANC is...
