Sufi Muslim shrine bulldozed in Libya

Tripoli - A shrine and mosque belonging to followers of Sufi Muslims has been bulldozed in the Libyan capital.

It is the third attack on a Sufi shrine in Tripoli in recent months. Officials have blamed past attacks on ultra-conservative Muslims known as Salafis.

The mystical Sufi movement of Islam reveres such shrines. Many Salafis view Sufis and the shrines as heretical.

Resident Abdullah Zakaria says he saw the bulldozers destroy the Sufi tombs on Saturday. Hours later a group of men bulldozed a mosque in the same area that also contained tombs.

Security officials closed the road leading to the mosque but did not intervene to stop the men from razing the shrines.

Not good. The transitional government should take a stand against this intolerance, and take a stand for multi-culutralism.

I am a sunni muslim and I know how intolerant we are, that's why I feel sorry for minority groups in Syria, Saudi and Pakistan. Those who liberated Libya are now enjoying the fruits of the freedom, the death and destruction of anything not related to wahabism. Now they want to repeat that in Syria, inshallah they will fail.
