Suicide bombers kill 14 in north-eastern Nigeria

Lagos - Four female suicide bombers killed at least 14 people in north-eastern Nigeria, the army and witnesses said on Friday.

"Four suicide bombers detonated their vests simultaneously" in the city of Maiduguri on Thursday, army spokesperson Rabe Abubakar said. He said 39 people were injured.

A local vigilante leader said the bombers were disguised as hawkers and detonated their explosives in the same neighbourhood.

"One of them targeted a crowd watching football on television while another one targeted a mosque," said the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The attack was typical of the radical Islamist group Boko Haram, which is based in the region.

The attack occurred on Nigeria's 55th observance of its independence day just as President Muhammadu Buhari told the nation that the army had "severely weakened" Boko Haram's logistics and infrastructure.

The group, which seeks to establish a state with the strictest interpretation of Islamic law, has killed an estimated 14 000 people since 2009.
