Nairobi - Suspected militants of the Somali Islamist group al-Shabaab on Tuesday killed 14 quarry workers in northern Kenya, police and news reports said.

The attack took place in Soko Mbuzi village near the Somali border as the workers were sleeping in tents outside their houses to avoid heat at night.

The attackers hurled petrol bombs before opening fire on the workers, the newspaper Daily Nation reported.

Fourteen people were killed and 11 injured, police chief Joseph Boinnet tweeted.

"All indications are that they were al-Shabaab militants," The Standard newspaper quoted Mandera County Commissioner Alex Nkoyo as saying.

Kenya Red Cross Secretary General Abbas Gullet said the organization was preparing to evacuate the 11 wounded workers from the area.

Nkoyo said police launched a manhunt for the attackers.

Al-Shabaab has carried out similar attacks in the area, including the massacre of 36 quarry workers in December.

The group has targeted Kenya since 2011, when Kenyan troops entered Somalia to help the government fight the group.

Al-Shabaab killed about 150 people at a university campus in Garissa last April and at least 67 people at a Nairobi shopping mall in September 2013.
