Johannesburg - A man suspected of robbing a bank in Germiston was shot dead on Thursday after shooting a policeman trying to stop him, Ekurhuleni metro police said.

A police dog unit was responding to a report of an armed robbery at a Nedbank branch in Wadeville, near Germiston, when they heard that a group, believed to be the robbers,  were crossing the N17 to escape into Castle View.

The two police officers were searching for the robbers in their bakkie when they saw a man coming towards them and suspected he might be one of them.

They turned towards him and, said a police spokesperson: “He pulled a gun and shot at the approaching officer".

The policeman was shot in the shoulder and his partner managed to get out of the bakkie and return fire.

The suspected bank robber was shot dead and police recovered a 9mm pistol.

The police arrested six people and recovered another 9mm pistol, a sub-machine gun and some of the money stolen from the bank.
