Swazi king laughs off uprising hopes

2012-08-06 22:49

Mbabane - King Mswati III of Swaziland taunted the West and his domestic political opponents on Monday, saying their dreams of a popular uprising in Africa's last absolute monarchy would not be realised.

"Some from the Western world have been waiting patiently and nursing hopes that the people of Swaziland will revolt and bring about regime change," the polygamous, UK-educated monarch told a rare public meeting in the impoverished southern African nation.

"Swazis are known the world over for being peace-loving and I would like to urge you to remain like that," he told the crowd of 500 elders assembled to chart a route out of a severe economic slump.

Mswati, who has at least a dozen wives and a personal fortune estimated at $200m, faced unprecedented protests 18 months ago when his appointed administration ran out of money after a 2009 recession in South Africa.

The cash crunch, caused by a collapse in regional customs receipts that normally accounted for 60% of state revenues, emboldened his pro-democracy opponents, who also took heart from uprisings against autocratic rulers in North Africa and the Middle East.

The government managed to keep itself afloat by running a Greece-scale budget deficit, eating into central bank reserves and raiding the state workers' pension fund until customs receipts picked up this year.

Despite the straitened times in the nation of 1.5 million, which has the world's most acute HIV/Aids burden, the royal household has shown few signs of wanting to tighten its belt.

Last month, South Africa's Mail&Guardian newspaper reported that three of Mswati's wives joined a 66-strong royal entourage heading to Las Vegas on a shopping spree. There has been no comment from Mswati's side.

"Give them cake to eat", Marie Antoinette said, and then promptly lost her head. Are we looking at a repeat?

Absolutely. I can hardly believe what I am reading!

Real African Mentality !! That is why Africa will always be one big f@ck up !! People starve of hunger and this d@@s takes his wives on a shopping spree in LA !Funny how these arrogant imbeciles talk sh@t about the west , yet they can`t do without the west ! If I was the west I wouldn`t even give a penny to africa !

      Sounds nervous to me.

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-08-07 07:59

The irony of it all is the support he gets from our "liberation" government. Yesterday we had to listen to the drivel about stopping abuse against women, yet not a word about this pedophile.

Actually, it's a misquotation to attribute that to Marie Antoinette, but the sentiment remains, this man is probably the biggest arse-orifice in Sub Saharan Africa. King Mswati, you are a drol.

Mswati has lost it. He is mad. He is not a king . He is a despot.

Sounds like Idi Amin did in his day ! He had paralysis of the Insane !

You know, I read articles like this and comments like the one by this Phatman character below, and I get so angry I literally get tears in my eyes. How can anyone in good conscience condone what is happening in Swaziland? Has this moron not seen what the greed of ONE man and a few of his cronies, has done to 2 MILLION ordinary Swazis who just want to live?!The issue here is what I alluded to earlier: CONSCIENCE!Because that word defines EVERYTHING about who we are as a people and as a continent. You talk about \African leadership philosophies\ but clearly have ZERO understanding of what that really means.Your generation has been a bitter disappointment. If the objective was to keep the wealth of Swaziland away from the \imperialists\, then someone should have warned the people of Swaziland that the alternative was that their country's wealth would instead go to the king and his so-called elders...King Mswati, I have no words for you.Suffice to say that every man must meet his ending at some point, but your legacy will live forever. And whenever the future speaks of you, I hope they spit in the streets with hatred contempt.I can only hope that there is a hell, and that you, Jacob Zuma, Robert Mugabe, and all these other so-called \elders\ who've plundered the promise of this continent for your own selfish pleasures, may you all burn in hell for what you've done to the people of this land...

All it takes is one good man with one bullet.

To quote Gadaffi and Assad: My people love, they will never revolt.

  • wesley.bischoff - 2012-08-07 08:50

Him and that good-for-nothing Goodwill Zweletini must both be ousted. They just live lavish at the taxpayers expense, whilst doing nothing for their people.

      BigChiefPlumbPudding - 2012-08-07 11:11

And the difference between them and the ANC is...?

  • shezlo - 2012-08-07 11:57

Lol... I love democracy, but let me ask, why do journalists lie so much? Ok away with Mswati, but why would the journalist say around 500 elders? Over 600 buses and taxis can bring only about 500 elders? there more young people than elders but those are not mentioned in the article, why? I love democracy but I hate it when some1 uses lie to climb to a throne because to me u will lie even when up there, right now u only using the ppl to reach that throne. A liar remains a liar, and this is exactly what makes the people of Swaziland not to come in numbers and support the struggle bcoz the ppl leading the struggle are double phased ppl, they say something on the face of the ppl and when then face the world they say another...SWAZI PPL ARE NOT STUPID, YES THEY WANT TO BE LIBERATED, BUT THEY ARE NOT STUPID as u think, as far as now there is no 1 capable to lead the Swazi Nation, all are liars and Power hungry, once they get into power they will be like Robert Mugabe and never want to leave the throne

  • sean.murphy.165 - 2012-08-07 12:56

I hope his people do rise up and smack that stupid look right off his face. The very thought of Monarchy makes me sick. The premise being that a king is the god appointed ruler on earth. I am an atheist and will never recognise a monarch.

      allcoveredinNinjas - 2012-08-07 14:15

Cultural relics , can be fine if they know their place and power are ceremonial but otherwise i agree 100%.

      Warwick - 2012-08-07 14:52

If this ever happens and he does get overthrown he will just come to good old SA and carry on living like a "king". Think of all the despots living here at the taxpayers expense, Aristide from Haitia, Ravalomina from Madagascar and I bet a few more.

  • darryl.maze1 - 2012-08-07 15:11

Well this is typical african culture. He only cares about himself and not his ppl. That $200 million should be taken away from him and used to feed the ppl of swaziland. No matter where in africa you are this his how they treat each other. These African presidents, kings, there wives and all there politicians live a life of luxury, steal all the money for themselves while the poor suffer even more. Its time the west and the UN stop wasting time on pathetic talks and go in and remove these ppl.

Swaziland is no different, nor is the good king of Swaziland any less of a vicious reptile than any other despot in the world. He is Hitler, Mugabe, Bush, Obama, queen elizabeth, rothschild, morgan, stanley, monsanto, zuma. He is a harvester of souls. I hope there are tv cameras when Swaziland finally loses it with this dick. I want to see swarms of angry hungry people eat that cvnt alive and use his entrails to hang his wives. Take your disgust and contempt and disbelief and disdain and apply it to SA. It's the same story the world over. The ANC and big business in SA = the swazi king. Zuma reigns over a 25% unemployed country (this excludes the millions of uncounted illegal immigrants). SA is AIDS-ridden, starving, and being sold off to the Chinese quicker than a whore in a saloon. The 1% continue, UNTOUCHED- no BETTER OFF- to do what the top 1% of humans do. Always at our expense. OCCUPY WALL Street took their disgust and contempt and disbelief and disdain to the streets Sept 2011. MILLIONS were inspired and now nearly every country has their own OCCUPY movement. Even SA has one. The best thing to happen to SA is The New Economic Rights Alliance - they've been fighting banks for some time, and last week, they took ABSA, NEDBANK, STD BANK and THE SA RESERVE BANK to the constitutional court. has 120 000 supporters, and we are going to drive a train up the SA banking industry's ass. We are done with the 1% running and ruling our lives.

A king who abuses and then taunts his subjects is one who begs for violent death. Swazis have wood; commence building guillotines!
