Arusha - A woman died on Monday as police dispersed demonstrators from Tanzania's main opposition party Chadema in Morogoro, a town to the east of the country.

"The police opened fire on the victim... despite the fact that she was not part of the demonstrations," Chadema spokesperson Erasto Tumbo told AFP.

Two other people were wounded during the demonstrations.

Party officials said they had received the go-ahead from Tanzanian police only for the authorities to later term the demonstrations illegal.

Speaking to local media, regional police chief Faustina Shilogile insisted that the protests were illegal.
