Cape Town – A documentary showing all that transpired during an al-Shabaab attack on Kenya's Westgate mall in Nairobi on 21 September has been released.

The documentary, Terror at the Mall was aired on cable TV channel HOB early this week.

A British filmmaker Dan Reed assembled thousands of hours of footage and came up with the harrowing hour-long documentary, which sheds light on what exactly took place on the fateful day, according to The New York Times.

Watch the video below.

"What I've tried to do is create a sense of the intimacy of violence," Reed, 49, was quoted as saying just before the premier screening last week.

Al-Shabaab, a Somalia terrorist group linked to al-Qaeda, attacked the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi on 21 September, resulting in the death of 69 people.

The mall, which had become a symbol of Kenya's rising prosperity, suddenly became the scene of one of the most chilling attack in east Africa’s history.

As Reed says in the documentary: "More than 100 security cameras recorded the attack.... some of the footage was destroyed by fire but much of it survives and it documents the attack in detail."

The footage, Reed said, also reveals courage and resistance by which so many civilians survived mass murder in a crowded shopping mall.

Some of those interviewed had this to say about the mall:

"It was the best mall in Nairobi. It was very upmarket, a place where prominent people came," said one of the survivors.

Another one said: "It was more than just a mall. It was really part of our lives."

Twitter was abuzz on Tuesday as people reacted to the documentary:
