Togo's opposition to take part in polls

Lome - Togolese election officials say the country's opposition parties have at the last minute indicated they plan to vie for seats during the planned July 21 parliamentary elections, ending their threat of a boycott.

Angele Aguigah, chairperson of the electoral commission, told a news conference on Thursday that the "Let's Save Togo" coalition will run against the ruling party in 30 constituencies, as will the opposition "Rainbow Coalition", ending the suspense surrounding their participation in the forthcoming ballot.

The parliamentary elections were due in October and have been delayed amidst opposition protests.

The "Let's Save Togo" coalition had threatened to boycott the elections denouncing conditions they say will favour the ruling party, including the redrawing of constituencies.
